Mobile Slewing Crane – Up to 20 Tonnes

• Steel cap boots, high visibility shirt, hard hat, safety glasses.
  • We recommend long sleeve shirts and long trousers and UV sunscreen. Steel cap runners are not acceptable. Safety sunglasses may be acceptable.
• Reasonable health fit for this work.

The purpose of our Slewing Mobile Crane training, up to 20 tonnes, is to provide students with the necessary skills and practical experience to operate a crane with a capacity of up to 20 tonnes in a safe working environment.

A Slewing mobile crane is defined as a mobile crane that can be rotated, incorporating a boom that can be equipped with various lifting gear such as ropes, chains, and sheaves. A slewing crane’s primary use is to raise and lower loads in a horizontal plane around its axis.

Operating a slewing crane of up to 20 tonnes involves the planning and preparation of a job in a safe and compliant way, conducting before and after operational checks, operating a slewing crane according to site instructions and finally shut down procedures of the crane.

All components of this course will be taught by our highly skilled trainers and assessors through written and practical teachings at our onsite training facility in Brisbane. The course content and will cover the following;

• Potential hazards, risks and environmental issues associated with operating a slewing crane
• OHS/WHS legislation, Australian standards and site procedures relevant to the operations of a 20-tonne crane
• Rated capacity and working load calculations
• Operational checks and shut down procedures
• Setting up an operating a slewing crane of up to 20 tonnes
• Various methods of communication in the workplace
• Traffic management plan
• Maintenance, Isolation procedures and necessary documentation
• Lifting and transferring loads using appropriate equipment

The successful candidate will have the skills and experience to demonstrate the following slewing crane activities;

• Estimate rated capacity and working load calculations in accordance with site load charts and lift plans
• Conduct crane movements using hoists and various other lifting gear
• Perform before and after operational checks of both the crane and lifting gear
• Identify hazards such as crane stability and overhead hazards, and apply the necessary control measures
• Detect any faulty plant or equipment and isolate according to site procedures
• Document information relevant to site procedures and crane operations
• Effective use of communication in the workplace specifically with doggers and riggers and ensure appropriate methods of communication such as hand signals and 2-way radios
• Understand manufacturer’s specifications related to the operations of a 20-tonne slewing crane.
• Comply with all relevant legislation, codes of practice and site documentation

On successful completion of this course, you will possess the skills and knowledge necessary, to safely operate a slewing crane of up to 20 tonnes across many worksites in Australia. Our trainers and assessors will ensure you have the confidence and assurance to gain employment in a variety of industries such as mining, construction, offshore drilling and more.

This training will provide you with the basics to further your skills in crane operations, with an increased tonne capacity of up to 60 tonnes, opening you up to greater employment opportunities in the future.
